Signs That an HVAC System Needs a Tune-Up

Sometimes, an HVAC system blows air that's cooler or warmer than it should be.

The heating or air conditioning system in a home is a considerable investment. Since it provides comfort to the home during the warm summers and cold winters, it is essential to keep it operating at optimal performance throughout the year. Although some signs of AC maintenance are apparent, others are not. Consider the following ways to tell if a system needs a tune-up.

Air is lukewarm or cool

Sometimes, an HVAC system blows air that's cooler or warmer than it should be. The first place to check is the air filters. If the air filters haven't been changed in a long time, then it’s likely that the system is clogged and air cannot circulate properly. Turn the system off and remove the filters for cleaning or replacement. Replace the filter, and then turn the system back on. Another possible reason for a lack of cold air is that the coolant is low. Coolant should only be refilled by a certified professional to ensure it's done safely and correctly.

Low air circulation

If the air is not flowing smoothly through the air ducts, check the unit for ice. In the case of ice in the air ducts, turn off the system, thaw out the ducts, change the air filters, and then turn the system back on. Low air circulation could also mean that the air ducts are dirty or blocked, either by internal debris or an item lying on top of the duct. Check the air ducts in the attic to ensure they are completely open. If there is a blockage somewhere in the unit, it's time to call a professional to resolve the issue promptly.

The unit is making loud noises

A noisy HVAC unit can indicate several issues. For example, if the system hasn't had recent maintenance, then the fluids may be running low and causing friction with several of the components. Additionally, the system's fan could be off-balance. There could also be weak fan belts or other damaged components, causing the air conditioner to be loud when turned on.

Keep the system running efficiently

The difference between a weak HVAC system running in top condition is the money spent investing to keep it operating. An air conditioner running at peak performance saves hundreds of dollars in major repairs. Routine maintenance and small part replacement from time to time cost far less than major repairs or total system replacement, which can cost thousands of dollars. There's also a difference in monthly energy bills. If the system is performing smoothly every month, then the bill should be drastically reduced.

Like any machine, HVAC units sometimes face problems. Regular maintenance can help prevent these problems, but they’re inevitable from time to time. If any of the mentioned issues are present, take action immediately. When in doubt, always call a professional, as they have the skill and knowledge to quickly restore an HVAC unit to strong working condition.
