Exploring the Various Types of HVAC Filters
HVAC filters play a pivotal role in your heating and cooling system. They remove various particles, including pet dander, pollen, and dust, from the indoor air and prevent them from circulating throughout the house. They also get rid of larger particles that may damage the system and cause a breakdown. However, there are various products on the market, so choosing the right filter can be challenging.
To help narrow your choices, here are the most common types of HVAC filters:
Fiberglass filters
Fiberglass filters are the most affordable. They’re disposable and put less strain on the system when sucking in air and keeping large particles out of the unit.
However, they’re not very effective in keeping out smaller contaminants, such as dust. Therefore, they may not be suitable for families suffering from respiratory problems. Their MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) is 4, in general, and may not be enough to expel allergens consistently.
Pleated filters
Pleated filters consist of polyester or cotton folds. They’re slightly costlier than fiberglass products but do a better job filtering small particles, including dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. More pleating typically results in better filtering of contaminants. Their MERV rating typically runs between 5 and 8.
HEPA filters
High-efficiency particulate filters are recommended for inhabitants with allergies and other respiratory issues. While they cost more than pleated or fiberglass filters, they boast the highest effectiveness when filtering small particles. They can screen out nearly 100% of mold, viruses, bacteria, and pet dander.
To help ensure optimal efficiency, try to find a filter with MERV ratings of 11 or higher. But bear in mind that higher ratings make it more difficult for the unit to pull in the air. To determine the ideal option for your property, consult a dependable HVAC technician.
Washable filters
Washable filters are pricier than disposable products, but they can save a lot of money in the long run. They can be removed and cleaned, meaning there’s no need to replace them frequently.
The maintenance procedure varies, but here’s what it usually entails:
Wash away dirt and residue with running water.
Let the filter dry in a bright and well-ventilated area.
Make sure your unit is completely dry before returning it to the HVAC. Otherwise, any dampness can trigger bacteria build-up and mold growth, posing a significant health risk.
Electrostatic air filters
Electrostatic filters run on electrostatic charges that attract airborne particles. Some types are washable and don’t require replacement very often. They can be more effective than the other types.
UV filters
As the name suggests, UV filters use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms. However, they’re not ideal for removing dust and are thus most commonly used as an add-on filter.
